Korea Boosts Water Development in Cambodia with 20 Years of Investment

In a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing water security, the Korean government has invested approximately USD 450 million in Cambodia over the past 20 years, significantly benefiting the nation’s water resources and meteorological sectors.

A recent meeting between His Excellency Tho Jetha, Minister of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, and Ms. Minnie Chey, Executive Director of the Korea Export-Import Bank of Cambodia (K-EXIMBANK), underscored the importance of this ongoing collaboration. His Excellency Tho expressed heartfelt gratitude for the consistent support from Korea, which has facilitated the development of vital irrigation systems and water infrastructure essential for the country.

“The partnership between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Korean Export-Import Bank has been instrumental in enhancing our water resource management and meteorological capabilities,” His Excellency Tho remarked. “We are dedicated to further fortifying this relationship to ensure the sustainability of our water resources.”

To date, the Ministry has successfully implemented seven key projects funded by K-EXIMBANK and is currently pursuing financial support for eight additional initiatives. These projects are set to enhance water resource management across provinces such as Pailin, Svay Rieng, Prey Veng, Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, and Pursat. Additionally, plans are in motion to establish a Hydrological Research and Observation Institute in Phnom Penh, aimed at advancing research and development in this crucial field.

As Cambodia confronts ongoing challenges related to water security, this partnership with Korea stands as a vital step toward achieving sustainable water management and fostering economic growth for the nation.
