Major Infrastructure Projects Broken Ground in 2020

Although 2020 was not a good year due to the COVD-19 pandemic and the recent floods, the government of Cambodia continuously updates infrastructure development. Thus far, none of the infrastructure projects have been delayed. Projects scheduled to break ground in 2020 have also already begun. Here is the list of the major infrastructure projects that saw ground broken in 2020.

1) NR 2 and 22 Renovation Project

The renovation of National Roads No. 2 and 22 are costing approximately US$56 million funded by the Republic of Korea and the Royal Government of Cambodia. As of December, the project is approximately 20% complete and scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2022.
The ground-breaking ceremony was presided over by Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen together with the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Cambodia Park Heung Kyeong on 11 February 2020.
The restoration section of NR2 covers a total length of 62.56 kilometres, from Takmao roundabout to Chambak and from Chambak to Doun Kaev roundabout in Takeo province. Meanwhile, the restoration section of NR22 covers a total length of 9.61 kilometres, from Doun Kaew roundabout to the Angk Ta Saom area, near National Road 3. (Read more)

As in December 2020, the construction of the road is 20% completed and is scheduled to finish in the first quarter of 2022. (Read more)

2) NR 10 connecting Battambang to Koh Kong

National Road 10 linking the Samlaut area of Battambang to Pursat and Koh Kong is over 198km long, and costs US$188 million financed by the Chinese government.

The ground-breaking ceremony was held on 9 March 2020 presided over by PM Samdech Hun Sen and the Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wentian.
The road will be constructed in accordance with the standard of road level 3, a technical standard of the People’s Republic of China, with a total width of 9 metres and two layers of DBST. Construction will take 48 months from December 2019 to December 2023. (Read more)

3) Aeon Mall 3

Located in Chak Angre commune, Meanchey district, Aeon Mall 3 is being built with an investment of US$290 million. The project has a total area of 174,000 square metres, which is larger than Aeon 1 and Aeon 2 combined.

The ground-breaking ceremony was presided over by Phnom Penh Governor HE Khuong Sreng and Aeon representatives on 7 October 2020. Meanwhile, the construction is scheduled to complete in 2023. (Read more)

4) Koh Norea Bridges

The Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC) broke ground on two major bridge projects on 26 October, presided over by Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen.
The first bridge connecting NR1 to Korea is a rainbow-shaped concrete bridge which is 16 metres long and 21 metres wide. The construction is expected to cost US$1.6 million and will take approximately 12 months to complete.
The second bridge connecting Koh Pich to Koh Norea is 824 metres long and 24.5 metres wide. The bridge has four main lanes and two motorbike lanes of 3.25 metres and 1.24 metres wide each. The construction is expected to cost US$38 million and will take about 35 months to complete.
Building these two bridges is part of the OCIC’s mega project of turning Koh Norea into a new satellite city. (Read more)

5) 38-road Renovation Project in Siem Reap

This renovation project has a total length of 108km and is estimated to consume a budget of US$140 million. The construction period is set for 13 months, which means the project will be fully completed by late 2021.
Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen officially broke ground on this project on 30 November. (Read more)

6) US$30 million SME Cluster Zone in Ta Khmau

Located on 6 hectares of land along National Road 21 in Kandal province, the US$30-million industrial 4.0 SME Cluster zone is an investment by The Worldbridge Industrial Developments Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the WorldBridge Group.
Ground was broken on the project on November 27 by the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation HE Cham Prasidh and founder and chairman of WorldBridge Group Oknha Sear Rithy.
According to Oknha Sear Rithy, the project is expected to be completed by April 2021. (Read more)
