Major Milestone Achieved at Tonle Sap Lake

In a significant development for environmental management and regional demarcation, the Tonle Sap Authority has announced the successful completion of border post constructions in three key areas surrounding the iconic Tonle Sap Lake. This ambitious project has reached a remarkable 100% completion, with a total of 1,224 border posts erected across six provinces.

During a recent meeting held on 26 December 2024, HE Tho Chetha, Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology and Chairman of the Tonle Sap Authority, provided an update on the implementation of this project. He emphasized the strategic importance of the border posts in enhancing the management and preservation of this vital ecosystem.

The designated areas are substantial in size: Zone 1 encompasses an impressive 436,879.11 hectares, Zone 2 covers 413,488.08 hectares, and Zone 3 stretches across 561,634.60 hectares. These zones are crucial not only for environmental protection but also for sustaining the livelihoods of local communities that depend on the lake’s resources.

Minister Chetha highlighted the government’s commitment to sustainable management of the Tonle Sap region, aligning with directions from Prime Minister Samdech Hun Manet. The prime minister has called for an accurate updating of maps and the establishment of border zones in a bid to enhance oversight and foster ecological integrity.

Looking forward, the authority plans to establish two additional area posts to strengthen further the regulatory framework governing this vital ecological zone. As implementation progresses, the focus remains on the sustainable stewardship of the Tonle Sap Lake, ensuring its protection for future generations.

With this landmark achievement, the Tonle Sap Authority is setting a precedent for environmental governance in Cambodia, and residents and stakeholders alike are eager to witness the positive impacts on the region’s ecology and community well-being.
