Phnom Penh to Undergo AI-Driven Renovation of Norodom Boulevard & Sisowath Quay

The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction has announced plans to renovate two of Phnom Penh’s prominent boulevards—Norodom Boulevard and Sisowath Quay—leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance urban aesthetics and functionality. The initiative was disclosed by HE Leang Monirith, Secretary of State of the Ministry, during a workshop on infrastructure development held in mid-October 2024.

The renovation project will employ AI technology to assess and transform key areas along these historic boulevards, visualizing future design improvements to revitalize the city’s landscape. This ambitious effort aligns with the ministry’s broader strategy to elevate urban planning standards and integrate innovative technologies into city development.

During the workshop, insights were shared by Brian Wong, a Singaporean architectural expert, who presented successful urban development case studies to an audience of hundreds of Cambodian experts and participants. Additionally, Mr. Sim Dara, a leading Cambodian AI specialist, highlighted the potential of AI in shaping modern urban environments.

HE Deputy Prime Minister Say Sam Al, who also serves as the Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning, and Construction, emphasized the necessity of renovating the boulevards to encourage pedestrian mobility. He cited the lack of proper sidewalks as a factor contributing to traffic congestion, as residents often resort to motorcycles and cars instead of walking, even for short journeys. The new renovation plans are part of the ministry’s efforts to improve public spaces and promote a healthier, more walkable city.

In addition to the boulevard enhancements, the Phnom Penh Capital Administration has earmarked three primary locations for a new 57-hectare pedestrian street, dubbed Pub Street, near the Cambodia Post. This ambitious project aims to be fully operational by the Global New Year in 2025, adding a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly hub to the city. (Read more)
