Most Cambodians Are Confused About Using the Word Sangsei, Bangsei, and Eangban

With thousands of years of history and the diversification of wording in the Cambodia language, Cambodians nowadays use different words to define certain things that have the same meaning. Even so, currently there is only one Khmer dictionary from Chuan Nat that is used to define words that are correct in the written form.

In fact, Cambodians often use words differently according to their region; for instance, the word “Sangsei [zinc]”, is used in some regions, while some call it Bangsei, and some call it Eangban.

These three words refer to a product that is normally used for roofing and wall, etc. The question is, which word is correct? If you are searching for the word in the Chuan Nat dictionary, you can only find the word Sangsei which means “Sangsei is a noun, from the German Zinc, a pure iron-coloured white element used in many forms.

In fact, Sangsei is only one of the elements mixed into zinc products which a mix of iron and zinc. However, zinc products mixed with aluminum make higher quality products. For example, zinc products from ISI PALM mix 55% of zinc with 45% of aluminium to ensure the zinc is of good quality.
