Siem Reap’s Old Airport Set to Transform into Premier International Event Venue

The Ministry of Tourism (MOT) has unveiled a visionary plan to repurpose Siem Reap’s old International Airport into a state-of-the-art international conference and exhibition hall. The announcement was made during the conclusion of a significant tourism review meeting, held from June 21-22, 2023, which focused on restoring and revitalizing Cambodia’s tourism sector amidst and beyond the challenges posed by the Covid-19 crisis.

HE Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, revealed his intention to submit a formal request to the Cambodian Government, seeking the designation of the former airport as a venue for hosting international conferences and exhibitions. This initiative comes following the imminent opening of the new Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, which is scheduled for October 2023, following successful trial runs. (Read more)

Moreover, Minister Khon also expressed his plans to urge the Royal Government to explore the possibility of constructing a nearby stadium or identifying a suitable location to further enrich the tourism landscape. These additional facilities would enhance tourism offerings, facilitate the organization of diverse tourism-related events, and contribute significantly to attracting visitors to Siem Reap.

The MOT’s strategic vision aims to leverage the available infrastructure and transform Siem Reap into a thriving hub for international conferences, exhibitions, and other notable events. By repurposing the old airport, Cambodia continues to demonstrate its commitment to expanding its tourism sector and solidifying its position as a premier destination for both leisure and business travel.
