The Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) has announced a plan to build a new waterway connecting the Bassac River to the coastal province of Kampot to facilitate the transportation of Cambodian goods abroad without relying on Vietnamese ports.

The project was announced by MPWT Minister HE Sun Chanthol during the 2021 work review meeting last week.

“We want to see progress on the waterway, and some provinces, such as Takeo, will benefit greatly from the water transport from Bassac River to the sea,” said HE Chanthol.

The ministry will study in detail the impact and cost to make the project a reailty soon without violating the legal aspects of the Mekong River Commission.

“We will study in detail the impact and cost to make the transportation from Phnom Penh to our sea feasible. Doing so, we can transport goods without going through the complicated procedure at Ka’am Samnor port in Kandal at Vietnam’s border,” HE Chanthol added.
