MPWT Urges Japan to Study the Feasibility of High-Speed Rail in Phnom Penh

A senior official of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport has urged the Japanese company NIPPON KOEI to study the feasibility of building a high-speed railway in Phnom Penh (Tramway). 

HE Toch Chankosal, Permanent Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, raised the proposal during the meeting with Japanese experts to discuss the improvement of the northern railways. 

He said the experts should help study the feasibility of the tramway, which is a type of low-cost public transportation. This study can be compared to the Automated Train Operating System (AGT) that JICA has previously studied. (Read more)

According to the Ministry of Public Works, NIPPON KOEI is supported by the Japan Transport Cooperation Association (JTCA), Japan’s only international cooperation unit focused on developing transport infrastructure. 

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen said that the priority infrastructure development project for Phnom Penh in the future will most likely be the subway. (Read more)
