NagaCorp to Conduct Further Study Before Launching US$350 million Siem Reap Resort

NagaCorp Chairman Tim McNally said that his firm will carefully study further, closely cooperate with the local government, and take into account various views before developing the US$350- million non-casino resort in Siem Reap, according to the GGRAsia on 22 February.

McNally’s comment came in response to the recent UNESCO’s concern that the non-casino resort by NagaCorp could cause negative impacts on the World Heritage site of Angkor Wat, although the firm claimed the site location is outside the protected zone. (Read more)

“The proximity of the site, the scale, scope and concept of the planned activities could indeed have an impact on the area including its setting, the surrounding landscape, the environment and the archaeological remains, all of which are an integral part of this World Heritage property,” read the UNESCO statement released on 17 February.

While not directly commenting on UNESCO’s statement, McNally told GGRAsia via email that NagaCorp’s efforts to promote the country’s culture as well as the country as a tourist destination will always involve respect and consideration of the overall development of Cambodia.

“We will continue to evaluate all relevant information received as part of the overall process in developing any property. You can be sure that any project developed by Naga in Cambodia will certainly involve discussion and frequent input as well as coordination with the Cambodian government,” said McNally.

“We do listen carefully to responsible opinions expressed and take into account the various views,” he continued.

According to NagaCorp, the resorts will be constructed on an area of 75 hectares, located outside the projected zone. Meanwhile, the first phase of the project is expected to be completed by 2025. (Read more)
