New Director of EDC Sets Ambitious Agenda: Tackling Rising Electricity Prices & Energising Sustainable Sources

HE Prang Chulsa, New Director General of Electricite du Cambodge (EDC) unveiled a forward-looking agenda aimed at stabilizing electricity prices and diversifying Cambodia’s energy portfolio in a promising inauguration ceremony address on 1 September 2023.

With unwavering resolve, he pledged, “We will leave no stone unturned in our quest to devise strategies that align with the Royal Government’s vision of affordable electricity. We shall explore every avenue to shield our consumers from rising electricity costs, even amidst global challenges that have led to price hikes elsewhere.”

Central to HE Prang Chulsa’s vision is advancing sustainable energy sources. He emphasized the imperative of harnessing renewable energy to reduce reliance on external power supplies, bolster domestic power generation, and unlock Cambodia’s potential as an energy exporter.

Cambodia, with its expanding network of power generation facilities across various provinces, is actively working to fortify its energy infrastructure. The recent approval by the Royal Government for private enterprises to construct five new power plants, capable of generating a combined 520 megawatts, underscores the nation’s commitment to energy self-sufficiency. These projects are projected to yield approximately US$322 million in tax revenue.
