New Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (AIAI) receives master plan certificate

The State Secretariat of Civil Aviation handed over the master plan certificate to Angkor International Airport Investment (AIAI) for the construction of the new Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport project, which is scheduled to be completed by 2023.

Dr Mao Havannal, Secretariat of Civil Aviation, handed the master plan certificate to Mr Lu Wei, Chairman of AIAI to build the new Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (AIAI), according to the official Facebook page of the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation on 19 June 2020.

Regarding the objective of this mater plan certificate, Mr Sin ChanSerey Vutha, spokesman for the State Civil Aviation Secretariat, told Construction & Property Magazine on 19 June that the master plan is a roadmap for the construction of any project which determines the duration, size and budget of each project.

“In general, the state has the obligation to provide recognition for any project under the direction of the Council of Ministers. Therefore, the Secretary of Aviation can only provide technical recognition for the project. And after the government approved the project, the company can implement the project accordingly,” he said.

“Because the implementation of the project is fast tracked, we have to construct while waiting for the approval to avoid any delay for the project, as the master plan will take a lot of time to make sure the project complies with social, environmental, technical, and safety standards. The company, on the other hand, can perform basic tasks such as clearing the ground, and breaking the foundations. And when the master plan is improved, the primary tasks are almost over,” he added.

The company has proceeded with the construction process on schedule. Construction started on 15 March 2020 and is scheduled to be completed in 36 months by 14 March 2023.

During the inspection on the progress of the new Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport (AIAI) on 15 June 2020, the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation’s technical team also inspected and equipped the airport technical equipment.

This US$900 million airport is being built on a 700-hectare plot and also includes a 1,000-hectare special economic zone.
