OpenRail Designer 2025: Redefining Efficiency for Global Rail Infrastructure

Bentley Systems has officially launched OpenRail Designer 2025, a major update designed to eliminate the manual bottlenecks that have long challenged rail engineers.

By focusing on advanced automation, data integrity, and high-fidelity geospatial integration, this release transforms how complex rail networks—from routine maintenance to high-speed megaprojects—are designed and managed.
As global demand for resilient infrastructure grows, the 2025 update addresses real-world pressures by shifting the engineering focus from tedious data management to high-level decision-making.

A core highlight is the enhanced Complex Redefine and Replace tools, which now fully support both horizontal and vertical geometry. This allows engineers to update comprehensive alignments simultaneously, drastically reducing the rework typically required when project requirements evolve.

To ensure safety and precision from the start, the software introduces a Validate Regression Data tool that checks survey data against user-defined tolerances before it enters the design phase. This works alongside an enhanced Cant Editor and new clearance reporting to ensure every design meets strict compliance standards with fewer iterations.

Effective design also requires environmental context, which is why Bentley has integrated Google Maps 3D Tiles directly into the workspace. This allows engineers to evaluate their projects against photorealistic 3D imagery and up-to-date satellite data. Furthermore, a new technical preview for ArcGIS integration enables a more holistic view of the project, helping teams identify potential clashes and assess environmental impacts with greater clarity.

Beyond geometry, the update introduces significant automation to free engineers from repetitive tasks. For example, the software now supports batch processing for low-voltage asset trenches and features “white space management” to preserve manual annotations through design iterations.

To protect project foundations, a new Civil File Health Monitoring system acts as an automated guardian, tracking file history and performing auto-repairs to prevent data corruption.
Bentley Systems is currently hosting a series of “Coffee Corner” webinars to help rail professionals transition to these new automated workflows and explore the latest geometry enhancements.

Register now for our “What’s New in OpenRail Designer 2025” Coffee Corner to explore the latest rail design automation tools and geometry enhancements.

Why “Smart” Pumps Aren’t Always Smart

Think a “variable speed” pump is a guaranteed money-saver? Think again. A recent analysis has revealed that a common engineering “shortcut” could actually be draining thousands of dollars from utility budgets every year. Junior engineers often fall for the “Pump Affinity Law”—a simple formula suggesting that if you slow a pump down by 20%, you […]
