Conservation International Restores 600 Hectares of Flooded Forest in Tonle Sap Over 10 Years

For over a decade, Conservation International Cambodia (CI) has partnered with the Cambodian government to restore approximately 600 hectares of flooded forest on the Tonle Sap, planting over 270,000 saplings since the mission commenced in 2010. This information was shared on the organisation’s official Facebook page on 9 July 2024.

Oum Sony, Country Director of Conservation International, emphasised the significance of this mission as part of their conservation program aligned with national policy. He stated, “This important mission is part of our conservation program in line with national policy, with the primary aim of restoring nature, particularly protecting the flooded forest, which is the most important habitat for fish and biodiversity for the benefit of all generations.”

In addition to the flooded forest restoration, CI Cambodia focuses on the recovery of major waterfalls and the preservation of rare, flood-resistant trees. Sony added, “Part of this conservation program is flood resilience and community fire prevention.”

CI Cambodia’s efforts in the Tonle Sap Lake region have included supporting local communities in planting seedlings at the beginning of each rainy season. Beyond Tonle Sap, CI’s conservation work extends to three other key areas: the Central Cardamom Mountains, Prey Lang Wildlife Sanctuary, and Vern Sai-Siem Pang National Park, which are critical wildlife sanctuaries in Cambodia.

This decade-long commitment underscores CI’s dedication to nature conservation and reforestation, contributing significantly to the preservation of Cambodia’s vital ecosystems.
