Philippines Seeks to Boost Agricultural Imports from Cambodia

In a significant move to enhance bilateral trade relations, the Philippines has expressed a strong interest in importing rice, fish, meat, and vegetables from Cambodia. This development follows a recent meeting between Philippine Agriculture Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr. and Cambodia’s Agriculture Secretary Dit Tina, where they explored opportunities for agri-trade cooperation.

The meeting highlighted the Philippines’ desire to incorporate Cambodian agricultural products into its market. Secretary Laurel announced plans to send a delegation to Cambodia to examine the agricultural production chain and identify the specific needs of the Philippines in this sector.

In a positive response, Secretary Dit Tina conveyed optimism about the potential for agri-trade between the two nations. He extended an invitation to Secretary Laurel and representatives from the private sector to participate in the Cambodia Agricultural Forum and Expo 2025, scheduled for November 2025. This event aims to showcase Cambodia’s agricultural capabilities and facilitate partnerships between Cambodian and Philippine investors.

The backdrop of this discussion is compelling. In 2024, trade volume between Cambodia and ASEAN member countries exceeded USD 14.3 billion, marking a 12.8% increase from the previous year, as reported by the Ministry of Commerce. Cambodia itself exported goods valued at over USD 4.62 billion, a rise of 8.87%, while imports from ASEAN reached $9.689 billion, corresponding to an increase of 14.85%. (Read more)

This initiative reflects the Philippines’ commitment to diversifying its agricultural imports and fostering stronger ties within the ASEAN community, positioning both countries for mutual economic growth and collaboration in the agricultural sector.
