Phnom Penh-Sihanouk Expressway 20% complete

Construction of the expressway linking Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville is 20% complete as of February 2020 with the whole project scheduled for completion by 2022.

The update was reported in a field visit held on 2 March at the construction site led by H.E. Yith Bunna, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport inspecting activities and the progress of the expressway construction as well as understanding the issues related to the ongoing construction.

He said that the government is currently accelerating the compensation to solve the issues of the people affected by the construction and plan to complete the settlement by mid-2020.

“Relevant ministries and institutions have closely cooperated in accelerating the construction, particularly the Ministry of Economy and Finance has solved about 70% of the compensation problems affected by the construction project and plans to finish the compensation by May 2020,” H.E. Yith Bunna said.

Cambodia’s first expressway is a mega infrastructure project which is built with four lanes stretching over 190km across five city and provinces.

This first-ever expressway is being built from village number 1, Sangkat Samrong Krom, Pursenchey district, Phnom Penh to village number 1, Sangkat number 4, Sihanoukville, according to the ministry.

The project is costing US$1.9 billion and is an investment by China Bridge and Road Corporation (CRBC) under a ‘Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT)’ scheme.
