Construction on Phnom Penh’s First Large-Scale Wastewater Treatment Plant to Begin in April

Construction of the US$27 million Japanese-funded large-scale wastewater treatment plant in the southern part of Phnom Penh is scheduled to begin on 26 April 2021, according to the Department of Public Works and Transport Director Sam Piseth.

Mr Sam Piseth told the press on 15 February that plant will be built on 3 hectares of land in the Cheung Aek Lake area, a part of the Boeung Tumpun Development Zone.

“With the capacity to treat water up to 5,000 cubic metres/day, this plant will be large enough to manage wastewater from big districts such as Chamkarmon, Khan 7 Makara, and Boeung Keng Kang,” said Mr Piseth.

He added that the working group has already met several times to discuss the impact resettlement issue since late 2018, where 22 families were found affected by the project.

“Nevertheless, we will try our best to complete the impact resettlement by March, and allow JICA to begin construction by 26 April,” said Mr Piseth.

This water treatment plant project was funded by the Japanese government through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), for which the grant agreement was signed in November 2019. According to the initial plan, the construction should have already begun in late 2020 but was postponed to April 2021 due to the delay in impact resettlement works. (Read more)
