PM Orders MPWT to Prioritise Subway Train in PP & High-Speed Railways

Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen has ordered the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) to speed up the progress of feasibility study and fund seeking for the subway train project in Phnom Penh capital as well as the project to upgrade two existing railways to high-speed lines.

According to MPWT Minister HE Sun Chanthol on 21 September, MPWT was ordered to put these two projects on the prioritized list.

“Among three options—subway, monorail, and AGT, PM Hun Sen chose the subway given the smaller impact on the city beauty and convenience of building stations,” said HE Sun Chanthol.

“The CCCC [China Communications Construction Company, the parent company of the PP-SHV expressway contractor] has already done preliminary studies, but we told them to adjust some parts before finalizing” he added.

On the other hand, HE Sun Chanthol said that the project to upgrade the two existing lines— Phnom Penh-Poipet and Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville—is also under study with the plan to push the speed to 160km/h, just like the one in Laos.

In the meanwhile, the government is also working on finding investors for the construction of these two projects.
