Progress on Water Diversion Systems Nears Completion in Phnom Penh

In a significant step towards improving water management in the capital and its surrounding areas, the water diversion project spanning approximately 260 kilometers is nearly complete. His Excellency Nguon Pich, head of the Technical Working Group at the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, conducted a field inspection to assess the ongoing developments.

Three key sub-projects—located in Kandal, Kampong Speu, Takeo, and Phnom Penh—are at various stages of completion. The flagship project has been fully completed, while two additional projects are over 90% finished.

The ambitious initiative aims to rehabilitate 10 rivers and canals while constructing 366 engineering structures that include four pumping stations and one water gate. This comprehensive approach addresses both water diversion and flood management challenges in the region.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, as of today, the project progress is as follows:

1. Prek Peam Sattha Sub-Project: Located in Ponhea Leu district, Kandal province, and Prek Pnok district, Phnom Penh, this section covers 18.7 kilometers. It features 27 small and large structures, along with one pumping station, and is approximately 92% complete.
2. O Khsach Canal Sub-Project: This 27.7-kilometer section, crossing Ang Snoul district in Kandal province and Kambol district in Phnom Penh, includes 49 small and large structures plus 1,500 meters of concrete canals, boasting a completion rate of about 99%.
3. Choeungcheong Canal System Sub-Project: This phase encompasses 23 kilometers in Choeungcheong and Sak Sampov districts of Dangkor district, Phnom Penh, featuring 44 structures and two pumping stations with a full completion rate of 100%.

The successful execution of these projects is expected to significantly enhance urban flood resilience and improve water management in Phnom Penh and its satellite areas, contributing to the overall development and well-being of the region’s residents.
