US$22m Cambodia-Japan Water Treatment Plant Unveiled in Pursat

The Cambodia-Japan water treatment plant in Pursat, valued at an impressive US$22 million, was inaugurated, marking a significant leap forward in the region’s water infrastructure. The official opening ceremony, held on December 28, 2023, was graced by the presence of HE Hem Vandy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and HE Ueno Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia.

Addressing the gathering, HE Hem Vandy highlighted the plant’s pivotal role, being the third water treatment facility built through the financial assistance of the Government of Japan. Following the inauguration of similar facilities in Siem Reap and Kampong Thom province’s Stung Sen II clean water plant earlier in 2023, the Pursat project underscores the robust collaboration between Cambodia and Japan in advancing crucial water infrastructure. The Cambodia-Japan Water Purification Plant, strategically located in Pursat City, boasts an impressive daily production capacity of 6,600 cubic metres, nearly doubling the water production capacity of the Pursat Water Supply Authority to 13,860 cubic metres. Facilitated by a 247-kilometre water distribution network, the facility is poised to provide clean, safe, sustainable, and affordable water to over 15,000 families in Pursat City and parts of Bakan and Kandieng districts.

This transformative project, funded by a generous grant of 2,405 million yen (approximately US$22.2 million) from the Government of Japan through JICA, materialised over 24 months, commencing in August 2021 and concluding in August 2023. The meticulously planned endeavour encompasses a state-of-the-art water treatment plant and a comprehensive administrative building, contributing holistically to the enhancement of water infrastructure in Pursat province.
