Ratanakiri Province Now Connected to National Grid

Ratanakiri province can now access the national grid with power was supplied from the Lower Sesan Dam 2 on a 230-kilowatt high-voltage transmission line.

Electricity du Cambodge (EDC) officially launched a 230-kilowatt high-voltage transmission line about 102 kilometres from the Sesan Dam 2 in Stung Treng province and a new 230-kilowatt grid substation in Ratanakiri province over last weekend, allowing Ratanakiri province to be connected to the national grid.

Victor Jona, Director General of Energy and spokesman of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, told the Construction & Property Magazine on 08 July that the connection to the grid will stabilise power consumption in the province.

“Through this new achievement, Ratanakiri province will have more economic activities providing employment to the people, as Ratanakiri is a border province, and the demand for energy will increase in the future,” he said.

Previously, Ratanakiri province had been using power from Vietnam’s transmission lines through a median voltage transmission line of 35 kilowatts, and another 22 kilowatts line from the Lower Sesan Dam 2. However, these power supplies were quite unstable.

Jona said that although connected to the grid, Ratanakiri still continues to import power from Vietnam, but this will gradually decline over time.

“Once the demand for electricity consumption in Ratanakiri province increases, the high voltage transmission line will be able to carry the power of 100 to 200 megawatts to supply demand,” he said.

According to the spokesman, EDC is continuing construction work on building a high voltage transmission line to Mondulkiri province.
