Reopening Battambang airport proposed

The Ministry of Tourism has unveiled plans to reopen an abandoned airport in Battambang province to facilitate the travel of national and international tourists.

The Battambang Airport rehabilitation project is among the key initiatives to facilitate travel and promote foreign capital flows to Cambodia.

Speaking at the Tourism Ministry’s 27 February meeting at Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel, Tourism Minister H.E. Thong Khon urged a feasibility study on the reopening of the airport in Battambang province.

“The airport of Battambang should be restored and rehabilitated to facilitate travel and tourism,” H.E. Thong Khon said.

The announcement of the Battambang airport’s opening was made while Battambang, located about 300 kilometres north of Phnom Penh, is attracting significant national and international tourists through its decades-old colonial-era buildings, historical sites, Angkor era ancient temples, and ecotourism sites.

The airport of Battambang was opened in 1967 and was closed in 1975 when the Khmer Rouge came to power. After the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime, the airport of Battambang was reopened to serve military aviation until 1991, when it was been closed until the present. Recently, a French company Airaviata (AAT) Cambodia Regional Airlines Company presented a study on an Investment Plan on Battambang Airport Rehabilitation Project to the Battambang Provincial Hall, which plans to utilise domestic and standard aircraft.
