S. Korea Mulls Transforming Former Pailin War Zone Into New Development Area

The South Korean government through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) is considering transforming a former war zone in Pailin province into a new development area, according to the Pailin Provincial Administration.

In a meeting with the Pailin officials on the morning of 23 December, KOICA representative Ro Hun Chun said that the project is still at the feasibility study stage.

“If the feasibility study is approved and the project is selected as the priority, KOCIA will inject approximately US$10 million to implement the project. The length of implementation will be 60 months from 2022 to 2025,” said Mr Ro.

“If implemented, this project will benefit a lot to the community, especially regarding the infrastructure development and poverty reduction,” he added.

The South Korean government, through KOICA, has been providing a lot of assistance to Cambodia, especially in infrastructure development. For instance, KOICA has recently provided US$80 million in grant aid for 12 major development projects. (Read more)

When counting all development projects, as of November 2019, South Korea has provided a total of US$889 million for 23 projects, of which only approximately US$442 million was spent. Meanwhile, South Korea has already agreed to provide Cambodia with another US$700-million loan from 2019 to 2023. (Read more)
