Siem Reap administration studying plans to develop a smart city

The plan to transform the former capital of Siem Reap into a Smart City was discussed at a Siem Reap provincial administration meeting with JICA on 2 March 2020.

The meeting examined the feasibility study for the implementation of the Siem Reap Smart City project to develop Siem Reap into an advanced Smart City compatible with other smart cities in the region and the world.

The meeting was presided over by H.E Tea Seiha, Governor of the Board of Governors, with a delegation from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) led by Tsuboike Asuka, Director of Urban Development and the JICA Department of Infrastructure and Peacebuilding, accompanied by 14 members, delegates and representatives from Japan.

A specific action plan of the project has yet to be set. However, the Siem Reap provincial administration official Facebook page posted that the two working groups will continue to meet and discuss an in-depth study of the project so it can respond to the current specific needs of the city, the current economic development of the country, and future tourism potential in Siem Reap province. With such a systematic approach, the new modern city project will achieve sustainable and effective implementation.

It should be recalled that the Royal Government of Cambodia recently approved three cities to be integrated into the ASEAN Smart Cities Network (ASCN) last year. The three Cambodian cities – Phnom Penh, Battambang and Siem Reap – will receive development assistance from the Japanese government to implement physical infrastructure and technology infrastructure development to achieve the city’s modernization goal.
