Southwest Phnom Penh Irrigation System Project Reaches 50% Milestone

The restoration and improvement project for the irrigation system in southwest Phnom Penh has hit a significant milestone, with the Kandal Stung-Bati sub-project now 50% complete. This achievement comes because of ongoing efforts to enhance water management in the region.

On 21 May 2025, HE Pich Veasna, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, conducted a direct inspection of the project. The Kandal Stung-Bati sub-project spans Kandal Stung district in Kandal province and Bati district in Takeo province.

Key components of this ambitious sub-project include:

– The construction of a 9.40-kilometre-long small dam.

– A 4-kilometre concrete main canal.

– Two water diversion structures.

– Five bridges.

– Eleven water discharge structures.

– Three water intake structures.

– One spillway dam at Kampong Dangkor.

– A total of 33 related structures.

During the inspection, HE Pich Veasna commended the progress made thus far, emphasising the importance of maintaining high-quality construction standards. He urged the construction company to continue focusing on technical excellence to meet project expectations.

This comprehensive project is financed by Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and consists of two main sub-projects: Rolang Chrey and Central Stung Bati. With a projected duration of 36 months, the project is on track for completion in June 2026.

The successful development of these infrastructures is crucial for improving irrigation and drainage in southwest Phnom Penh, paving the way for enhanced agricultural productivity and water resource management in the region.
