The Gov’t Launches Kampong Chhnang City Sewage Treatment Plant to Enhance Public Health and Sanitation

In a significant step towards improving public health and environmental sanitation, the Kampong Chhnang City Sewage Treatment Plant was officially inaugurated on October 10, 2025. The ceremony was led by H.E. Peng PoNea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, alongside key stakeholders involved in the project.

During the launch, the Minister emphasized the project’s vital role in serving the communities of Kampong Chhnang Province and neighboring areas. “This facility is not just about infrastructure; it represents our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our citizens. It will help alleviate flooding during the rainy season and will significantly improve the sanitary conditions in surrounding provinces,” he stated.

The sewage treatment plant is part of the larger Tonle Sap Lake Urban Environmental Management Improvement Project, which spans a total area of 247 hectares across four communes in Kampong Chhnang City—Phsar Chhnang, Kampong Chhnang, Baier, and Khsam. While the overall project allows for an expansion of 15 hectares dedicated to the sewage treatment plant, current construction occupies 4.5 hectares.

With a capacity to effectively filter 5,400 cubic meters of wastewater daily, the facility has already established connections to wastewater networks for 500 homes and office buildings. Additionally, it has facilitated the construction of toilets for 1,293 low-income families, along with a natural-flow sewage network. These advancements are anticipated to greatly enhance the well-being and environmental cleanliness for residents, marking a significant achievement in urban environmental management in the region.

As Kampong Chhnang City continues to grow, the sewage treatment plant stands as a quintessential component of the government’s efforts to tackle waste management challenges and promote sustainable urban living.
