Study of New Airport in Koh Kong Province Paused

The plan to construct a new airport in Mondul Seima district, Koh Kong province proposed by LYP Group and Bangkok Airways has seen no progress since 2019 as the firms have paused feasibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) will not revoke the license from the two firms but strongly urged that they should resume the plan after the pandemic subsides.

In late 2019, the government allowed Cambodia’s Ly Yong Phat Group and Thailand’s Bangkok Airways to conduct a feasibility study of building a new airport on 400 to 600 hectares of land in Baklang commune, Mondul Seima district.

However, to date, SSCA spokesman Sin Chansereyvutha confirmed with Construction & Property Magazine the there is no progress.

“For almost two years, no progress has been made. However, we will not revoke licenses. It is good if the firms build the airport. If not, it is also fine as it will not affect our air transportation, said Mr Chansereyvutha.

The two companies first intend to do improvement on the abandoned airport in Khemerak Phumin city. However, due to many impacts, the government has allowed the firms to conduct the study on the new land plot, where the plan will also include the establishment of special economic zones. (Read more)

This project is entirely different from another US$350-million Koh Kong Airport in Dara Sakor district, which is being constructed and invested in by China’s Union Development Group.

To date, the main construction for the new Dara Sakor International Airport has been completed and it should be operational by the end of this year.
