Strategic water infrastructure in Thmar Koul district reaches 35% completion as Cambodia accelerates its transition toward resilient and commercialized farming communities

Battambang province is witnessing a major transformation in its agricultural landscape as the irrigation development project for the Tasei Samaki Agricultural Community reaches 35% completion. On January 19, 2026, Chhea Bunrith, Permanent Secretary of State at the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, led a field inspection to monitor the progress of this vital infrastructure located in the Thmar Koul district. The project is a critical component of the national strategy to modernize rural farming and move away from weather-dependent subsistence agriculture.

The Tasei Samaki Agricultural Community has long been recognized as a model for sustainable farming in Cambodia. Comprising over 160 households, the community specializes in high-value, safe vegetable production using advanced net-house technology. By providing a stable and efficient water supply, the new irrigation system will allow these farmers to cultivate crops year-round, significantly reducing the risks posed by seasonal droughts and erratic rainfall. This infrastructure is expected to directly support the production of cabbage, kale, and lettuce, which are already being supplied to major supermarkets in Phnom Penh and beyond.

During his visit, Secretary of State Chhea Bunrith emphasized the importance of construction quality and adherence to technical standards. He urged the construction teams to maintain their momentum to ensure the project meets its deadlines, as reliable water management is essential for the community’s long-term economic stability. The project aligns with the government’s Pentagonal Strategy, which prioritizes water security and the empowerment of modern agricultural communities to boost national export potential.

The success of Tasei Samaki is built on a foundation of collaboration and innovation. Community members have reported monthly incomes ranging from $500 to $1,000 since transitioning to modern farming methods, a significant increase from traditional rice farming. With the addition of this new irrigation network, the community is poised to further scale its operations, serving as a blueprint for other provinces looking to modernize their agricultural sectors and improve the livelihoods of rural families.
