Thailand to Provide Over 100km of Used Railroad Tracks to Cambodia in August

The Thai government will hand over more than 100km of used railroad tracks to Cambodia from August 2020 to use for restoring and enhancing the railway system in Cambodia.

The hand over will take place after the Thai government made a promise to donate used railroad tracks to Cambodia during the inauguration ceremony of Stung Bot-Ban Nong Ian Friendship bridge in 2019.

Ministry of Public Works and Transport’s spokesman Vasim Sorya said on 30 July that the railroad tracks would help improve rail transport in Cambodia.

“The Thai government will hand over more than 100km of used railroad tracks to Cambodia, starting from August. Those tracks will be used for restoration and improvement of our rail track. After restoring, the new system will help increase train speed and increase the capability of the rail track to support the weight of 15 tons to 20 tons,” the spokesman explained.

However, he added that after receiving the donation, the restoration process would not start immediately.

“First, we planned to use the railroad tracks to upgrade the northern railway, but we now don’t have the budget to implement it, so we just receive them for storage,” he said.

The railway between Cambodia and Thailand was officially connected in late 2019. However, goods and passenger transport via border crossing trains are still not operational due to construction of some main infrastructure such as railway stations still ongoing.(Read more)

“We will continue working on this matter, such as constructing international railway stations, preparing legal procedures, warehouses, terminal, and so on,” he added.
