Land of Opportunity: Cambodia’s Strategic Initiative to Distribute 1,507 Hectares to Veterans & Needy

In a landmark move, the Cambodian has earmarked two expansive land concessions totalling 1,507 hectares in Kampot province for distribution among former armed forces personnel and impoverished families, as part of a concerted effort to address social inequality.

This initiative was unveiled during a pivotal meeting on the “Campaign to update the work and check the actual situation at the location of social land concessions,” presided over by HE Sao Sopheap, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, on 22 April 2024.

The designated land concessions include a significant parcel of 1,288 hectares, from a larger area of 1,586 hectares, situated in Techo Aphivath commune, Chhouk district. This allocation is specifically aimed at benefiting former members of the Armed Forces and their families, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting those who have served the nation.

The second concession, a 219-hectare plot spanning Trapeang Klang commune in Chhuk district and Stung Keo commune in Teuk Chhou district, is set aside to assist 90 landless families in dire need, underscoring a targeted approach to alleviating poverty through land distribution.

This initiative is not without precedent. The Ministry of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction, in collaboration with local authorities in Kampong Chhnang and Mondulkiri provinces, previously designated 322 hectares and 6,000 hectares, respectively, as judgement areas. These areas were earmarked for the identification, classification, mapping, and registration of state land to be distributed as state private land to the populace.
