La Arng Spean Prehistoric Site to Become New Tourist Attraction in Battambang

Plans to transform the ancient La Arng Spean prehistoric site in Battambang province into a new tourist destination are underway, aiming to highlight the site’s historical significance dating back over 70,000 years. This development was announced by the Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Battambang Provincial Department of Tourism on 20 May 2024.

Mr. Ham Arun, Deputy Director of the Department of Tourism of Battambang Province, emphasised the site’s potential to attract tourists interested in exploring and learning about Cambodia’s ancient inhabitants. Infrastructure enhancements, including improved access roads, stairs, toilets, and information facilities, are planned to support this initiative.

La Arng Spean, featuring a cave and ancient tombs, has not yet seen significant tourist traffic. However, efforts are underway to draw both national and international visitors to this historically rich location. This development marks a significant step in promoting Battambang’s cultural heritage and tourism potential.

To reach La Arng Spean Prehistoric Station, travellers can take National Road 57 from Battambang to Pailin for approximately 41km past Rattanak Mondul District Hall, then turn right onto a red gravel road for an additional 3km.
