Since climate change has become one of the major issues of our world, architects around the world are turning their designs into innovative, eco-friendly, and green buildings. US construction project management software firm Procore Technologies, Inc. has listed their top five innovative green building in 2021:

Valley in the Netherlands

This project is designed by well-known Dutch architect firm MVRDV. Covering 75,000 sq. m, the notable point of this mixed-use development project is the greenery that grows on a terraced, publicly accessible valley between two of the three towers on the 4th and 5th levels, and the vegetation running up and down the sides of the building. According to Procore, the building has reached a -0.3 Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) rating and a GreenPoint Rated (GPR) score of 8.

World’s Largest Waste-to-Energy Plant in Shenzhen

This waste-to-energy plant is designed by Danish firms Schmidt Hammer Lassen and Gottlieb Paludan. With a total area of 66,000 sq. m., the roof of the factory is covered by solar panels for self-generated in-house power usage. The plant will incinerate 5,000 tons of waste per day and produce 550 million kWh of electricity annually.

Bee’Ah Headquarters in the UAE

Located in the middle of the desert, Bee’Ah’s new headquarters has a total area of 7,000 sq. m. and is designed to withstand wind, sandstorms, and heat, which help to minimise the amount of cooling needed during the day. Besides, the waste heat generated by AC will be used to provide hot water. A central courtyard is also open to allow natural light and air into the interior. Moreover, this building will also produce its own power through the solar panel.

BRAC University Campus and Public Park in Dhaka, Bangladesh

The unique point of this campus is the park. The engineer will replace an existing swamp with a sustainable bio-retention pond and native landscaping to prevent the heat. There is also a recreation park on the roof, with a swimming pool, running track, and a sports field. Besides, this campus will also be powered by solar panels which are enough for lighting and fans.

Aquarela Complex in Quito, Ecuador
This building is designed by the well-known architect Jean Nouvel, winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize. The project has a total of nine towers, of which the first three are scheduled to be completed in 2021. The building is surrounded by 1.5 hectares of outdoor greenery spread between vertical gardens, terraces, balconies, and walkways. Again, solar panels will be used as the energy source for water heating in the building.
