Transformation of Knong Phsar: Green Ecotourism Development Project Reaches 100% Completion

The landscape of sustainable travel in Cambodia has reached a significant milestone with the total completion of the Knong Phsar Green Ecotourism Development Project. Located in Taing Bompong Village, Ta Sal Commune, Aural District, this ambitious initiative has finalized all planned infrastructure to enhance the visitor experience while protecting the region’s unique natural heritage. During a recent site inspection on January 31, 2026, Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth confirmed that the project’s achievements now stand at 100%, signaling a new era for community-managed leisure destinations.

The newly completed infrastructure includes a grand mountain entrance gate, dedicated parking for cars and motorcycles, landscaped gardens, and a network of tree plantings to restore the local ecosystem. Tourists can now benefit from a community market, information centers, first-aid rooms, and clean sanitation facilities. Furthermore, the Ministry of Rural Development has successfully surfaced a 7.2-kilometer road connecting Wat Tang Bompong to the foothills, significantly improving accessibility for travelers and residents alike.

Beyond mere tourism, this project serves as a strategic tool for socio-economic development. By providing modern facilities and a structured tourism model, the initiative empowers local villagers to transition from illegal logging and hunting to becoming eco-entrepreneurs and forest guardians. This shift not only diversifies household income but also fosters a deep-seated commitment within the community to conserve the biodiversity and scenic beauty of the Cardamom Mountains.

The development of Knong Phsar is a key component of the government’s broader Pentagonal Strategy and the Ministry of Environment’s Circular Strategy, which prioritizes a clean, green, and sustainable Cambodia. With its breathtaking 360-degree views and now-complete support infrastructure, Knong Phsar is poised to become a premier destination for domestic and international nature enthusiasts, ensuring that environmental protection and economic prosperity go hand in hand.

It is remarkable that the hike up the mountain behind the market is over 4 kilometers long and takes approximately 4 hours to reach the camping area on the mountain.
