US$17 million Steel Processing Plant in Kampong Speu Officially Opens

A new US$17 million steel processing plant in Oudong district of Kampong Speu province officially opened last week, bringing the total number of metal scrap plants in Cambodia to four.

The project is invested by Chinese firm Hong De Sheng (Cambodia) and will use metal scraps in the country as raw materials to produce finished steel. Hong De Sheng (Cambodia) said it could produce up to 500,000 tons of finished steel per year.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation HE Oum Sotha said that this steel processing plant would contribute a lot to infrastructure and construction development, in both the private and public sectors in Cambodia.

Besides Hong De Sheng (Cambodia), Cambodia has three other steel processing plants registered with the Ministry of Industry, including Cambodian Jin Liang Metallic Technology in Sihanoukville, Dopro Steelwork (Cambodia) in Kampong Speu, and Tang Meng Rath Investment in Dangkor district.

According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Cambodia currently does not have any steel manufacturers that use locally extracted metal ore as raw materials, although the ministry has previously issued several mining licenses to private companies.

Data from the General Department of Customs and Excise of Cambodia shows that Cambodia imported more than 720,000 tons of steel in 2019, worth more than US$477 million.

Oudong district and Kampong Speu province have attracted many factories investment projects, especially along National Roads 41, 44 and 51. (Read more)
