US$190-million Cambodia’s largest water treatment plant 60% complete

Construction of the Bakeng water treatment plant phase 1, Cambodia’s largest plant with a treatment capacity of almost 200,000 m3/day, has reached 60% completion as of February and is scheduled to be completed as planned in 2023.

HE Long Naro, Director General of Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority, said on March 1 that currently the construction team is laying a 2-meter-diameter pipe under the Tonle Sap River, which is a historic construction.

“So, by the end of 2023, we will have enough water to use, and at the beginning of 2024, we will ensure that there will be no water shortage in Phnom Penh,” he added.

The Bakeng water treatment plant is the largest water treatment plant ever built in Cambodia and will be implemented in two phases. The first phase is scheduled for completion by early 2023, with the capacity to produce approximately 200,000 m3/ day of clean water, while the second phase will expand the total capacity to almost 400,000 m3/ day by the first quarter of 2024.

Co-funded by the French Agency for Development and the European Investment Bank the project has an investment value of over US$190 million.

The ground was broken on the project on 1 February 2021 under the presence of Prime Minister Hun Sen after a four-year feasibility study which began in 2017. (Read more)
