US$2.5 million spent for waste water drainage system in Sihanoukville

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport started a project on 09 December to restore and expand canals to prevent flooding in Sihanoukville with a budget of US$2.5 million.

The project was started in the presence of H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport and H.E. Kuch Chamroeun, Provincial Governor of Preah Sihanoukville province.

The project will expand and deepen the five main canals to ensure the draining of waste water in the rainy season.

The project is scheduled to be completed in March next year.

Speaking at the event, H.E. Sun Chanthol said the project is an effort by the government to restore the five main natural canals in the city which have seen their banks invaded by illegal properties. The work will protect against flash flooding in the rainy season.

During the 2019 rainy season, Sihanoukville was regularly flooded.

Figures from the ministry show that in 2018, the amount of waste water in the city was 25,000 cubic metres per day and is projected to increase to 47,000 cubic metres per day by 2023 and to 64,000 cubic metres per day by 2030.

In November, the construction of 34 roads stretching over 84km in length was started to improve the road infrastructure in the city and bring quality and beauty to serve the tourism sector.
