Transformational US$22 Million Sewerage and Wastewater Treatment Plant Project Commences in Kampong Cham

Kampong Cham Municipality witnessed a significant milestone with the official groundbreaking ceremony of the fourth phase of the Mekong Subregion Corridor Development Project, marking the commencement of a state-of-the-art sewerage system and wastewater treatment plant. Valued at approximately US$22 million, the project is poised to revolutionize the region’s sanitation infrastructure.

Under the distinguished presence of HE Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of Public Works and Transport, the inauguration of the construction site took place on June 16, 2023. The endeavor has received a concessional loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), further attesting to the project’s importance and the confidence it has garnered from key stakeholders.

Esteemed construction firm Beijing Urban Construction Group Co., Ltd (BUCG) has been entrusted with the responsibility of bringing the project to life. The construction process will be closely supervised and inspected by RAMBOLL DANMARK A/S in collaboration with Oriental Consultant Global Co., Ltd., SCE, and Tancons (Cambodia) Co., Ltd.

The comprehensive plan for this sub-project encompasses the development of critical infrastructure, including the establishment of a sewage network that will serve 3,965 residential and office buildings. This will be supported by a 51-kilometre main and sub-pipeline system, three main pumping stations, and multiple sub-stations. Additionally, a cutting-edge wastewater treatment plant boasting a storage capacity of 5,000 cubic meters per day will be constructed.

The drainage system is equally prioritized in the project, featuring a range of structures such as V-shaped stone drainage spanning 2,929 meters, box concrete drainage stretching 903 meters, concrete ball drainage extending 244 meters, and U-shaped concrete drainage spanning 89.9 meters. Moreover, the comprehensive drainage scheme will include a designated drainage area and a pumping station to ensure effective management of rainwater.

The initiation of this transformative project signifies a monumental step towards improving public health and environmental sustainability in Kampong Cham. With a projected completion date set for December 2025, the community can look forward to reaping the benefits of enhanced sanitation infrastructure and a cleaner, more resilient city.
