Revolutionary Discovery: Used Diapers Offer Alternative to Sand in Concrete and Mortar

In a groundbreaking development, researchers from Japan’s University of Kitakyushu have unveiled a remarkable breakthrough in construction materials—a potential replacement for sand in mortar mix using used disposable diapers. This revolutionary finding holds tremendous promise for the construction industry, presenting an eco-friendly solution that can help address both resource scarcity and waste management challenges.

The process involves washing, drying, and shredding used diapers, which are then combined with cement, sand, gravel, and water to create a unique mixture known as mortar mix. Rigorous laboratory testing was conducted using six different samples with varying concentrations of diaper waste, measuring the strength and durability of each mixture under pressure.

The results astoundingly reveal that up to 10% of sand in traditional mortar mix can be replaced with the diaper mixture, making it suitable for constructing columns and beams in three-story houses. In single-story houses, the proportion can be increased to an impressive 27%.

Moreover, this innovative technique has the potential to replace up to 40% of sand used in manufacturing mortar for partition walls.

By employing this novel approach, the construction industry can embrace a sustainable alternative, opening doors to low-cost housing initiatives worldwide. Beyond the economic benefits, this breakthrough also offers a compelling solution to the growing environmental concern surrounding the disposal of used diapers.
