Vaiko Irrigation Canal Project Nears Completion with 80% Milestone in Svay Rieng Province

The Vaiko Irrigation Canal Phase 2 (Kampong Chrey Reservoir) Project in Svay Rieng province has reached an impressive 80% completion. This milestone was confirmed by HE Ton Vanthara, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, during an inspection on 5 February 2024.

The comprehensive project encompasses the construction of a canal for water release, dams, and the development of the Vaiko Irrigation System Phase 2, specifically the Kampong Chrey Reservoir. The initiative aims to bolster water management for agricultural purposes, contributing to increased rice production and supporting local farmers.

As of 5 February 2024, the dry season rice cultivation for 2023-2024 has exceeded expectations, with 28,740 hectares cultivated, surpassing the planned target by 140.2%. This positive outcome underscores the project’s efficacy in optimizing water resources for agricultural sustainability.

The inspection also covered various project components, including pumping water from reservoirs into designated canals for irrigation purposes. Additionally, the construction progress of the Mekrang Leav canal (2,250 meters in length) from the Cambodia-Vietnam border canal to save 280 hectares of dry rice in Svay Thom commune, Svay Chrum district; and the Vaiko Irrigation System Phase 2 was scrutinized, revealing an impressive 80% completion status. The entire project is slated for conclusion by the end of February 2024.

Initiated in 2017 and concluding in 2021, the Vaiko Irrigation Development Project’s second phase extends across the eastern part of Prey Veng province and the western part of Svay Rieng province. Encompassing an expansive area of 795,000 square kilometers, the project is poised to provide irrigation water for 93,100 hectares in the rainy season and 23,300 hectares during the dry season.
