European Companies Explore Medical Waste Management Investment in Cambodia

In a significant step towards enhancing environmental sustainability in Cambodia, Ecosteryl, a Belgian company, has expressed a keen interest in investing in medical waste management. This initiative aims to address the pressing issue of medical waste and plastic pollution in the country.

The discussions took place during a meeting on 20 May 2025, between HE Dr Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, and Ms. Sarah Gasquard, Chargé d’Affaires of the Belgian Embassy in Cambodia, which is based in Bangkok. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Jean-Pierre Muller, Trade and Investment Advisor from the Wallonia Export and Investment Agency (AWEX), and Ms. Léa Lenclus, Asia Business Development representative for Ecosteryl.

During the meeting, Ms. Gasquard introduced Ecosteryl as a potential investor in Cambodia’s medical waste sector, highlighting the company’s commitment to promoting sustainable solutions for medical waste disposal. In response, Minister Eang Sophallet emphasized that the Cambodian Ministry of Environment plays a crucial role in licensing medical waste management operations and warmly welcomed new companies looking to enter this vital market.

Looking to the future, Minister Eang revealed plans to adopt advanced technologies aimed at burning plastic waste at temperatures exceeding 1000 degrees Celsius. This innovative approach is expected to mitigate public health risks and contribute positively to environmental health in Cambodia.

Furthermore, the ministry intends to enhance landfill facilities to meet international technical standards, integrating a digital administration system to streamline processes and reduce bureaucratic hurdles for environmental investors.

The Ministry of Environment is also actively implementing Belgium’s annual cooperation program in collaboration with the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), further underscoring the commitment to environmental initiatives in the region.

As the global focus on sustainability grows, Cambodia’s efforts to improve its waste management practices could serve as a model for other nations facing similar challenges.
