Feasibility Study Underway for Phnom Penh-siem Reap Expressway

Two companies are conducting feasibility studies for a Phnom Penh-Siem Reap Expressway, according to the Minister of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) on 28 January 2019.

Speaking to reporters after signing a road construction agreement with Japanese firms, H.E Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister and Minister of MPWT, said that two companies are now studying the feasibility of building the expressway.

“We have two private companies that are studying the Phnom Penh-Siem Reap Expressway with four lanes, on the BOT theme [build-operate-transfer],” he said.

“We allow them to conduct study, but they have not yet submitted their study results to the ministry yet,” he added.

The move to invite private firms for this route arose since National Road No.6 from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap has different road sizes. From Phnom Penh to Skuon, the government has already upgraded the road to four lanes while from Skuon to Siem Reap remains only two lanes.

Therefore, the government is opening its doors for the private sector to invest in the construction of a four lane Phnom Penh-Siem Reap expressway.

The government of Cambodia is currently pushing hard for this type of infrastructure development with the country’s first expressway on the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville route set to break ground in the very near future.
