France and the EU are planning to enhance the capabilities of the PPWSA to support the development of clean water in Cambodia

The French Development Agency (AFD) and the EU intend to assess the potential of the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority  (PPWSA) to accelerate the advancement of Cambodia’s water sector. This initiative is set to begin in early 2025, following discussions on October 14, 2024, which included HE Hem Vandy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation.

The discussions emphasized collaboration to boost the Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority’s capacity to help Cambodia achieve the Sixth Sustainable Development Goal, which aims for universal access to water and sustainable management of sanitation services.

During the meeting, Mrs Sandrine Boucher, AFD Country Director for Cambodia, noted that AFD has been active in Cambodia’s water sector for over 30 years. As part of their technical assistance, AFD has dispatched a team of experts to conduct a feasibility study focused on water sector reform, which is also scheduled to start in early 2025.

The EU has confirmed its funding for this feasibility study, aligning it with the Second European Common Strategy for Development Cooperation, which prioritizes water sector reform.

The meeting with HE Hem Vandy and the management team of Phnom Penh Water Supply Authority provided crucial insights to the AFD team, particularly regarding the objectives and expected outcomes of their mission. The participants expressed their commitment to jointly support this initiative to ensure its success.
