Gov’t Decides to Build Two Pedestrian Bridges on NR 3 Despite Local Concerns

The Cambodian government has decided to build pedestrian flyovers on two highly-congested spots across National Road 3, despite concerns from the locals, according to HE Sun Chanthol during the NR 3 construction site inspection on 04 January.

The Minister of Public Works and Transport HE Sun Chanthol told the press that one pedestrian bridge will be built in front of Tram Khna Thmey Market, and another one in front of a high school nearby.

“We have decided to build those two bridges even there have been some disputes with the locals. We so far have received a lot of requests from the locals that they don’t want the bridges as they will ruin the beauty of the market and the school. Rather, they request for a normal crossing spot,” said HE Sun.

In response, HE Sun wrote a technical letter to Prime Minister Hun Sen regarding the importance of the bridge. After consideration, PM Hun Sen has agreed to build and urged all the locals to cooperate.

“The main purpose of this bridge is for the safety of the locals especially the students. Four lane roads are very dangerous to cross. It’s better to be safe than sorry,” said HE Sun Chantol.

To date, the construction of NR3 is 90% complete and will be finished ahead of schedule by September 2021. (Read more)
