Gov’t to Upgrade Existing Railways to High-Speed & Build Two New Lines

The Cambodian government has unveiled plans to upgrade the existing railways to a high-speed system and also to build two new lines connecting Phnom Penh capital to Siem Reap and Bavet.

The plan was discussed in the cabinet meeting on 16 December chaired by Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen.

According to the press release, the high-speed railway project will be implemented on the Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville and Phnom Penh-Poipet lines.

Meanwhile, the government will also study the possibility of building two new lines, one connecting Poipet, Siem Reap, Kampong Thom, and Phnom Penh, and another connecting Phnom Penh to Bavet city.

The development of railways is to reduce traffic congestion and increase transportation capacity to contribute to socio-economic development, read the statement.

Cambodia currently has two railway lines from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville and from Phnom Penh to Poipet city.
