Hong Leong Manufacturing Group Explores Opportunity to Invest in Motorcycle Factory in Cambodia

Malaysia’s Hong Leong Manufacturing Group is exploring establishing a motorcycle factory in Cambodia, signaling a major boost for the kingdom’s manufacturing sector. The announcement came after a productive meeting between Okhna Tan Khee Meng, President of the Malaysian Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia, and HE Chea Vuthy, Secretary General of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), on 29 November 2024.

During the meeting, Okhna Tan Khee Meng outlined Hong Leong’s interest in expanding operations into Cambodia, highlighting the motorcycle factory as a flagship project. The company also evaluates additional investment opportunities, including ceramic production, semiconductor manufacturing, and real estate development.

HE Chea Vuthy welcomed the potential investment, encouraging the company to conduct market research to identify the size and demand for motorcycles in Cambodia. He further recommended that Hong Leong consider establishing operations within Cambodia’s special economic zones (SEZs) to leverage infrastructure and government incentives.

In a broader scope, the secretary-general urged the company to diversify its investments into the plantation industry, focusing on rubber processing and agricultural products to support Cambodia’s growing value-added production chain. These ventures, particularly the motorcycle factory, are anticipated to create significant employment opportunities, boost local supply chains, and position Cambodia as a regional manufacturing hub.

As Hong Leong Manufacturing Group evaluates its next steps, the proposed factory and related investments could mark a transformative chapter for Cambodia’s industrial sector, attracting further foreign capital and strengthening economic growth.
