How Bentley’s AI Tools are Empowering a New Wave of Green Engineers

Bentley Systems is now providing students and educators with free access to the same professional-grade tools used on massive real-world projects, as the young generation, such as Gen Z engineers, are rapidly becoming the driving force behind a global shift toward smarter and more resilient infrastructure.

Unlike previous generations, today’s graduates are entering the field as digital natives. Through Bentley’s education portal—which offers free software access to students—eligible graduates are arriving at their first jobs already proficient in the industry’s most sophisticated tools.

From AI-driven design that identifies energy-efficient processes to Digital Twin technology, these tools are allowing young engineers to hit the ground running. By using software like MicroStation and OpenRoads, graduates are bringing “future-ready” skills to employers, reducing the need for technical onboarding and keeping businesses competitive.

Bentley Systems is also collaborating with Louisiana State University (LSU) in launching America’s first Digital Twin Design and Production Certificate.

This online program is designed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and practical industry application. It trains students and professionals in infrastructure monitoring, predictive maintenance, and interdisciplinary strategy.

The challenges of modernizing aging roads and building climate-resilient cities are significant, but for Gen Z, these are viewed as opportunities rather than obstacles, according to Bentley Product & Industry Marketing Director Jena Shore.

As these young leaders step into the workforce, they aren’t just joining a profession—they are joining a movement to create a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
