Hydropower dam projects proposed in Koh Kong

China Huadian Lower Stung Russei Chrum Hydroelectric Project (Cambodia) has proposed two hydropower dam projects in Koh Kong province to the government, after the company completed the feasibility study.

The company presented the results of feasibility study on the two projects which are capable of generating 170MW to the Ministry of Mines and Energy for checking and discussion in a meeting held on 26 August.

According to Ministry of Mines and Energy, the hydropower dam projects are Stung Veal Thmor Kambot hydropower dam and Stung Russei Chrum Kandal hydropower dam.

Yim Piseth, chairman of the Electricity Authority of Cambodia (EAC), who attended the meeting, said that the results of two projects are not yet completed, requiring more study to add some requirements.

He said that the projects; one with a capacity of 100MW and another with 70MW, are located in Mondul Sima district, Koh Kong province.

“The company presented the results of feasibility study in the meeting…but after discussion and checking, there were a few points that remain uncompleted and the meeting asked the company to re-conduct the study,” Mr Piseth said on Tuesday.

He said the ministry has decided to establish a working group composed of officers from the ministry, EAC and EDC (Electricite Du Cambodge) to help the company in its technical studies.

China Huadian Lower Stung Russei Chrum Hydroelectric Project (Cambodia), a subsidiary of China Huadian Corp, is currently operating a 338MW hydropower dam in Koh Kong province’s Mondol Sima district.

This US$578 million hydropower dam began operation in 2015 after nearly five years of construction.
