Cambodia Approves Over US$3bn in 190 New Projects in Six Months, Kampong Speu Leads in Investment

In the first half of 2024, the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) approved 190 new investment projects, production expansion projects, and special economic zone investments, totalling US$3.2 billion and creating 168,572 jobs. This marks an increase of 77 projects and more than US$2 billion in investment capital compared to the same period in 2023, as reported by the CDC on 5 July 2024.

Kampong Speu province led with 43 projects, followed by Svay Rieng province with 40 projects. Among the 190 approved investments, tourism attracted 56.59%, infrastructure and other industries 23.11%, and industry 18.07%, while agriculture and agro-industry absorbed only 2.21%.(Detailed report)

Notable projects outside the SEZ include:

  1. Five-Star Hotels & Business Centre: An investment project to establish and operate 2,870-key five-star hotels and a business centre in Village 4, Sangkat 4, Sihanoukville, Preah Sihanouk province, with an investment capital of approximately US$574 million, creating 3,860 jobs.
  2. Stung Meteuk Hydropower Project: A 150MW hydropower project in Mondul Seima district, Koh Kong province, under a BOT arrangement, with an investment of more than US$440 million, creating 220 jobs.
  3. Kampong Chhnang Logistics Centre: A multi-purpose port and logistics centre in Keng Ta Sok village, Kampong Hao commune, Kampong Leng district, Kampong Chhnang province, with an investment of about US$108 million, creating 115 jobs.
  4. Data Centre in Phnom Penh: An investment project to establish and operate a data centre in Village 1, Sangkat Srah Chak, Khan Daun Penh, Phnom Penh, with an investment capital of approximately US$107 million, creating 54 jobs.
  5. Solar Power Station: A 60MW solar power station in Prey Chrov village, Kbal Teuk commune, Teuk Phos district, Kampong Chhnang province, with an investment of over US$65 million, creating 35 jobs.
  6. Additional Data Centre: Another data centre in Sangkat Toul Sangke II, Khan Russey Keo, Phnom Penh, with an investment capital of approximately US$30 million, creating 43 jobs.
  7. Christmas Decorations Factory: A factory to produce lamps, decorative lamps, Christmas trees, and accessories in Prey Sakum village, Prey Thom commune, Kampong Ror district, Svay Rieng province, with an investment capital of approximately US$22 million, creating 1,306 jobs.
  8. Amusement Park in Koh Kong: A modern amusement park in Koh Sdach commune, Kirisakor district, Koh Kong province, with an investment of about US$14 million, creating 5,150 jobs.

Notable projects within the SEZ include:

  1. Car Tire Production Expansion: An expansion project in Chiluchean Pouchai Special Economic Zone, Svay Rieng province, with an additional investment of about US$212 million, creating 655 jobs. A second phase adds more than US$105 million and 542 jobs.
  2. Aluminium Processing Plant: Located in Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone with an investment of US$60 million, creating 237 jobs.
  3. Brake Pads Production: A project in Manhattan Special Economic Zone, Svay Rieng province, with an investment of US$30 million, creating 253 jobs.
  4. Another Aluminium Processing Plant: Located in Jiangsu Special Economic Zone on National Road 6, Kampong Cham province, with an investment of US$25 million, creating 684 jobs.
  5. New Special Economic Zone in Kampong Chhnang: An SEZ project with an investment of US$168 million, creating 723 jobs.
  6. SEZ in Svay Rieng: An SEZ project with an investment of US$75 million, creating 331 jobs.
  7. SEZ in Kandal: An SEZ project with an investment of about US$32 million, creating 72 jobs.
  8. SEZ in Sihanoukville: An SEZ project with an investment of US$19 million, creating 424 jobs.

The surge in investment reflects Cambodia’s growing appeal and the proactive efforts of the CDC to attract and facilitate significant economic developments across the country.
