Indonesia Looks to China for Support in AI Development

In a significant move to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, Indonesia has officially invited China to assist in developing AI technology and nurturing digital talent, particularly in key sectors like fisheries and agriculture.

During a recent statement, Meutya Hafid, Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, emphasized the country’s focus on harnessing AI to boost productivity in these Industries. “One of our main priorities in AI development lies within the fisheries and farming sectors. We hope China will lend its support,” she remarked.

Following her meeting with Chinese Ambassador Wang Lutong, Hafid noted Indonesia’s dedication to expanding AI applications, highlighting successful implementations in various agricultural projects across the nation. She stated that collaboration with China would be instrumental in enhancing the capabilities of AI-driven tools, which, in turn, could significantly augment national output.

The minister also unveiled plans to strengthen digital infrastructure cooperation between Indonesia and China, suggesting the exploration of partnerships at the university level to accelerate the country’s digital transformation. “We are encouraging collaborations between Chinese companies and local governments to foster a thriving digital ecosystem,” Hafid added.

In support of this initiative, Ismail, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, highlighted a growing trend of Indonesian digital talents studying at Tsinghua University in Beijing. He expressed enthusiasm for further collaboration with the prestigious institution, including the potential establishment of an AI-focused branch in Indonesia.

“We are committed to facilitating such partnerships that will enhance our AI capabilities,” Ismail affirmed, reiterating that Indonesia is open to cooperation with all nations, provided that local laws and regulations are respected.

As Indonesia embarks on this transformative journey, the call for international collaboration exemplifies the country’s strategic approach to leveraging technology for sustainable growth in vital sectors.
