Strengthening Economic Ties: Indonesia Commits to Infrastructure Development in Cambodia

Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo has reaffirmed his nation’s commitment to bolstering economic cooperation and contributing to infrastructure development in Cambodia. The Indonesian news agency ANTARA reported this significant announcement on May 10, 2023, highlighting the president’s intention to strengthen ties between the two countries.

During bilateral talks held on the sidelines of the 42nd ASEAN Summit, Indonesian Foreign Minister Reth No Masudi shared that “President Joko Widodo discussed the continuation of economic cooperation, emphasizing Indonesia’s keen interest in participating in infrastructure projects in Cambodia.”

Indonesia has a track record of supporting Cambodia’s infrastructure development efforts. The Indonesian Ambassador to Cambodia from 2018 to 2023, Mr. Sudiman Hasseng, previously extended assistance to the country in the realm of railway infrastructure. A meeting between the Ambassador and Mr. Men Vibol, Governor of Svay Rieng Province, on June 17, 2022, highlighted this collaborative effort.

In January 2022, both Cambodia and Indonesia further solidified their economic cooperation through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tourism Cooperation in Sihanoukville.

The MoU, signed by Mr. Sandika Onno, Minister of Tourism and Innovation of Indonesia, and Mr. Prak Sokhon, Minister of Tourism of Cambodia, outlines comprehensive cooperation in various areas such as tourism promotion, marketing, management, private sector engagement, capacity development, and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions).

This steadfast commitment by Indonesia to support Cambodia’s infrastructure development and strengthen economic ties underscores the mutual desire to enhance cooperation and foster sustainable growth. As Indonesia lends its expertise and resources to Cambodia’s infrastructure projects, the stage is set for greater economic prosperity and collaboration between the two nations.
