International firms eye waste-to-energy plant in Sihanoukville

International firms from Singapore and Malaysia are looking to invest in waste-to-energy plants in Sihanoukville province, according to a 27 August meeting between the companies and the provincial governor.

The investment plan was revealed by Mr Dato Mah Kaseng, Director of Ric Natural Development Plc and Sihanoukville Provincial Governor H.E Kuoch Chamroeun.

According to a Facebook post from the provincial administration, Ric Natural Development is interested in investing in a waste-to-energy plant while investment firms from Malaysia and Singapore have expressed interest in investing in a bio fuel and tourism port in the province.

The investment initiative came as Sihanoukville is seeing significant development over the past years while the city’s population has reached more than 300,000 people, which has also created a parallel increase in garbage.

H.E Kuoch Chamroeun welcomed the initiative while citing that the province generates about 1,000 tons of garbage each day and this amount is expected to increase in the future.

“The company needs to study the project deeper in regard to the market, to reach the goal in investing in a waste-to-energy plant efficiently,” H.E Kuoch Chamroeun.

The firm will need to study the amount of garbage needed in order to produce 150-megawatts of electricity which will be set as the base for collecting garbage, leading to the establishment of the plant, said H.E Kuoch Chamroeun.

According to Mr Dato Mah Kaseng, the company is currently successfully operating a waste-to-energy plant in Thailand and is establishing another one in Laos.
